The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday withdrew its appeal seeking medical records from UPMC for gender-affirming care the hospital system provided to minors. Messages left with UPMC and the Justice Department Monday evening were not immediately returned. “Its rhetoric regarding gender-affirming care reflects callous indifference, if not abject cruelty,” Bissoon wrote. Briefs were initially due from the Justice Department on May 11. McKenzie noted that in some jurisdictions across the country, the Justice Department has reached settlements with hospital systems to stop providing gender-affirming care.
