Crude oil leaking from a tanker grounded near a nature reserve off Oman has created an oil spill covering about 390 square kilometers, according to Reuters. The Caroline Bezengi, a 274-meter tanker carrying nearly one million barrels of Russian crude bound for Asia, first reported problems off Yemen on June 8. The islands are home to wildlife including Arabian Sea humpback whales and Socotra cormorants. The Environment Authority said the slick extended northeast of the islands and was within about seven km of the coast. Greenpeace estimated last week that the slick covered about 600 square kilometers, based on satellite imagery.
