The European Commission, Meta, and TikTok agreed Monday to establish a direct information-sharing channel with independent fact-checkers to identify and respond more quickly to online disinformation linked to the recent migrant surge into Ceuta, three people familiar with the talks told POLITICO. The move responds to a wave of false online claims in late July suggesting migrants entering Ceuta would receive asylum or other assistance in Spain. European Commission officials met with representatives from Meta and TikTok on Friday and again on Monday. The talks came amid concern among participants over online posts encouraging another wave of crossings on Aug. 15, according to the people familiar with the discussions. Meta and TikTok said dedicated teams are already monitoring content related to the Ceuta crisis under their existing policies.
