The wildfire in eastern Attica on Monday, August 10, that broke out on Monday morning in Kouvaras, eastern Attica, is being attributed to sparks caused by contact between low-voltage cables belonging to the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE/HEDNO). The fire broke out in low-vegetation area in Kouvaras, eastern Attica, on Monday morning, lead to evacuation of one settlement and the total damage of one livestock unit. it is not the first and it won’t be the last wildfire caused by the electricity distribution network as long as the HEDNO does not proceed to the maintenance and modernization of the network. The huge wildfire in Rethymno, Crete, last month was found to have been caused by sparks in power poles and led to the arrest of one local HEDNO official. Greek media reports claim that 75% of the wildfires in Greece are caused by the power poles.
