Op-Ed: Reject the expansion of a government monopolyBy Rawle Lucas(Kaieteur News) – I learnt that the government plans to start selling bottled water through Guyana Water Inc (GWI). The experience of GUYSUCO stands out as a reason not to encourage the expansion of a government monopoly. Just like GUYSUCO, GWI lost 27 cents on every dollar it spent on labour cost last year. It is another government monopoly that is still unable to get things right as is the case with Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Transport and Harbours Department also operates a monopoly water transport service on behalf of the government.
