Minnesota election experts: SAVE America Act would disrupt voting to fix ‘a problem that doesn’t exist’

The SAVE America Act passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in February. The U.S. Senate adjourned this weekend without taking action on the SAVE America Act, which U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called “dead on arrival.” Minnesota election officials and voting rights experts interviewed by MinnPost no longer expect the legislation to pass this year. They warn, however, that should the SAVE America Act or something like it pass into law after the midterms, it would upend elections in Minnesota and other states. It would also direct state election offices to coordinate with other state and federal agencies to verify existing voters’ citizenship status.
