Initially his death was not being viewed as suspicious, with police assuming it to have been a medical event. The public were not told of a gunman on the loose until Tuesday February 27 – ten days after the 65-year-old's body was found. Police Scotland admitted their response had "fallen short" of what was expected but an investigation into the force's handling of the case has been dropped. Douglas Low told BBC Scotland as part of a new two-part documentary about the investigation and trial: "I was so angry and so sad at the same time. I can't imagine why someone would say that's a medical event"Jacqui Low said: "It just seems incredible that they didn't see the marks on his face, the shot."
