“At this stage it is not possible to know if bluetongue is circulating in Scotland, or whether this is an individual case,” she said.
The case is the first recorded in Scotland during the 2026 to 2027 bluetongue season.
Across the UK, there have been 289 confirmed cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3).
There have been no reported cases of bluetongue serotype 8 (BTV-8) during the current season.
Farmers can also monitor confirmed cases through the official bluetongue case map, which records premises in Great Britain where one or more animals have tested positive for bluetongue by PCR.
