The Libyan Authority for Scientific Research (LASR) has held a meeting at its Tripoli headquarters to discuss a project to launch Libya’s first national satellite, a CubeSat dedicated to climate monitoring and the fight against desertification. The meeting, held on 3 August and chaired by LASR Director General Prof. Faisal Abdul-Azim Al-Abdali, reviewed the project’s scientific vision, strategic objectives, and national significance. Discussions covered the satellite’s potential role in supporting environmental monitoring systems, tracking climate change, and enhancing Libya’s capabilities in space technologies. The proposed satellite will serve as a strategic research initiative, providing up-to-date data to monitor climate change and combat desertification, challenges of particular relevance to Libya and the wider North African region. Space in Africa will follow the project’s progress and report further developments as they emerge.
