Amazon is closing in on Costco to become the nation’s second-largest CPG retailer, according to the latest data from Numerator released Wednesday. Amazon + Whole Foods gained one percentage point of CPG share year over year representing more than $16 billion in consumer packaged goods spending—and now sits just 0.1 share points behind Costco. On the warehouse front, Costco continued to widen its lead over Sam’s Club, growing CPG share by +0.46 percentage points while Sam’s Club lost 0.45 points year over year. Among current Sam’s Club shoppers, Amazon gained +0.8 share points of CPG spending compared with +0.4 points for Costco year over year, signaling Amazon has become an increasingly important competitive alternative for warehouse club shoppers.
