Core Training and StabilityThese days, athletes are focusing more attention on core stabilization—during routine training and especially during rehabilitation after an injury. Certain martial arts facilitate good core development; however, core stabilization is more commonly associated with Pilates and yoga. Core stabilization and core training involve a broad spectrum of exercises that strengthen the muscles of the trunk, abdomen, pelvis, and shoulder girdle. Restoring the coordination and control of trunk muscles will improve control of the lumbar spine and pelvis. Core stabilization requires elements of strength training, endurance training, coordination development and, most important, motor learning.
