Second-screen style but in books?
[]
So many books, so little time
It has been speculated that services like Netflix increasingly commission shows to be second-screen proof, that is to say, frequently recap what just happened/is happening/what the stakes are, tell not show, ensure that someone can zone out for 10 minutes and come back in and pick up no problem.
I was reading a popular beach reach/summer crime kinda thing and this one page stopped me in my tracks because it said the same thing three times. She was looking at this guy with amnesia who was maybe someone she used to know (but didn’t recognise her or was pretending not to) and three different times her internal monologue explained the situation and the consequences. Like yes, we get it!
It got me wondering, has second-screen style reached books? What is the second screen in this case? In the case of a beach read, maybe just distractions, family coming over to bug you, drinks breaks etc? Or has it always been a thing?
