Belgium has launched a large-scale trial aimed at recycling flexible food packaging – such as crisp packets, biscuit wrappers and plastic film – back into food-grade materials. Collected via the country’s standard PMD recycling bags (used for plastics, metals, and drink cartons), the project is a collaborative effort between food companies Mondelēz International, Ferrero, PepsiCo and Pladis, alongside Fost Plus, the organisation coordinating household packaging recycling in Belgium. European HolyGrail 2030The Belgian trial is a real-world deployment under the European HolyGrail 2030 – Circular Packaging Consortium programme. The subsequent recycling trials – designed to transform these sorted materials into food-safe plastic – are scheduled to commence before the end of the year. This project aligns with the upcoming European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates a minimum of 10% recycled content in plastic food packaging by 2030.
