Industry leaders question Burnham ‘subscription trap’ move

Media industry leaders have questioned Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s move to bring forward measures to end so-called ‘subscription traps.’
The PM wants to make subscriptions easier to cancel and to force companies to make it clear when contracts auto-renew at a higher price.
But the accelerated timeline has led to criticism from news industry leaders and other digital publishing trade bodies.
The NMA also issued a joint statement with techUK, the Online Dating and Discovery Association and the Professional Publishers Association.
But shadow chancellor Mel Stride branded the measures “reheated” and said the prime minister “has already run out of ideas”.
