Saint Lucia Strengthens Health Surveillance by Adding Noncommunicable Diseases

Saint Lucia is strengthening its national health surveillance system by integrating noncommunicable diseases into its broader framework for detecting, reporting and responding to public health threats.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition, with support from the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, recently held a five-day training workshop to improve the capacity of healthcare workers and other stakeholders to use the country’s Integrated Health Surveillance Guidelines.
A major development was the inclusion of noncommunicable diseases in Saint Lucia’s national surveillance framework.
The move is significant because noncommunicable diseases remain a major cause of premature death across the Caribbean.
By combining infectious disease preparedness with routine surveillance of noncommunicable diseases, Saint Lucia is moving toward a more comprehensive and data-driven public health system.
