National 811 Day reminds Kentuckians: Call before you dig

That’s the message behind National 811 Day on Aug. 11, when utilities and safety organizations across the country are reminding homeowners, contractors and businesses to call 811 before digging.
In Kentucky, residents are encouraged to contact Kentucky 811 at least two full working days before beginning any excavation project.
A damaged underground utility line can result in service interruptions, expensive repairs, environmental damage, serious injuries or, in some cases, life-threatening situations.
A statewide safety messageColumbia Gas of Kentucky is among the utilities using National 811 Day to reinforce the importance of safe digging.
Signs of a possible natural gas leak can include the smell of natural gas, a hissing or blowing sound near a pipeline, or blowing dirt or bubbles from the ground.
