Teenager drowns off Rockaway Beach after he and a friend went swimming after lifeguards went off duty

At approximately 7:30 p.m., NYC Parks lifeguards and EMS were alerted to the two swimmers in distress near Beach 84th Street.
As the incident occurred after the beach was closed to swimming, lifeguards were not on duty in their chairs.
FDNY swimmers recovered the 17-year-old boy near Beach 83rd Street and removed him from the water unconscious and unresponsive.
The 18-year-old who was brought ashore by the Parks lifeguards was transported by EMS to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
