The rare group, awarded to Private J.R. Venning for his service in the Second Boer War (1899–1902), was sold at auction for more than fifty times its pre-sale estimate by Kinghams Auctioneers.
Expected to fetch between £100 and £200, the medals achieved a hammer price of £4,600, rising to more than £6,000 with the buyer’s premium.
"The medal group attracted tremendous pre-sale interest, but everyone in the room was delighted to learn that the group had ultimately been secured by Private Venning's descendants.
Also included is the corresponding miniature dress medal, manufactured by Spink & Son, and the Edward VII Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, awarded to Venning for his later service as a serjeant.
Private Venning served with the City Imperial Volunteers, an elite volunteer force raised in response to the war in South Africa.
