Bail shock for Namiwa: Judge moves hearing smid ‘overthrow’ allegations
['Nyasa Times']
Malawi Nyasa Times – News from Malawi about Malawi
The High Court in Lilongwe has pushed back the bail hearing for CDEDI boss Sylvester Namiwa, shifting it from Wednesday to Thursday this week — a last‑minute change that has stirred fresh tension around the already‑charged case.
According to a letter sent to all parties, the court says Wednesday will be “too congested”, forcing the rescheduling.
Namiwa’s lawyer, Gift Mwenye, says they were told the court would be overwhelmed mid‑week and insists they are relieved the delay is minimal, given how long Namiwa has already spent in custody.
Police arrested Namiwa recently, and prosecutors have slapped him with serious charges, including attempting to overthrow the government and spreading false information — allegations that have sparked fierce debate among rights groups and political observers.
The bail hearing now set for Thursday is expected to draw intense attention as supporters demand his release and critics insist the case must proceed.
