A Madison police officer who fatally shot a man on July 22 has been named. The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation identifies the officer who fired the shots that killed 38-year-old Cory Ruiz as Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, with 10 years and 10 months law enforcement experience. Baitinger-Peterson and three other officers located Ruiz after responding to a report of a person involved in checking parked vehicles and an “alleged burglary attempt.” According to DCI Ruiz became involved in a physical altercation with officers, during which he showed a fixed-blade knife and injured Baitinger-Peterson. Bystander video which has been widely circulated shows Ruiz being shot, and the shooting has been the subject of protests and a two week-long encampment which city officials cleared last week.
