By providing financial and technical assistance, Audubon hopes to empower landowners to recognize the value of their land within the Mississippi Flyway and encourage voluntary action to improve 700 acres of critical migratory bird habitat by 2030. Migratory species represent some of the steepest losses, in part because they rely on a connected network of high-quality habitat to complete their journeys. Since most bird habitat in North America is privately owned, voluntary recognition programs are essential to addressing the decline of migratory bird populations and achieving conservation outcomes at scale. Audubon created the Adopt-a-Flyway pilot program in Minnesota to incentivize bird-friendly land management and reduce fragmentation in areas identified as critical stopover and breeding habitat for migratory birds. “Connected and healthy habitats are key to supporting the bird species that use the Mississippi Flyway.”
