A new open-source project called Xodus is attempting to break down one of the heretofore impenetrable barriers between Linux gamers and Microsoft’s PC gaming ecosystem. However, one major part of the PC gaming ecosystem has remained stubbornly tied to Windows: Microsoft’s Xbox PC infrastructure and PC Game Pass. Xodus can reportedly authenticate Microsoft and Xbox accounts, obtain game licences and download Xbox PC games. The developers are working on replacements for components of Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Runtime and other services expected by GDK games. Valve’s Proton has made a good chunk of the Steam catalogue playable on Linux, but Microsoft’s PC gaming ecosystem remains considerably harder to access locally, with cloud streaming serving as one of the only workarounds for Linux users.
