The programme returns to the people and personal stories behind the landmark vote, examining how the referendum changed individual lives and Ireland as a country a decade on. Journalist and writer Colin Murphy re-interviews people originally spoken to by journalist Charlie Bird in 2015, when Ireland went to the polls to decide whether to introduce marriage equality. “In 2015, Charlie brought me an extraordinary series of interviews he had done around the referendum, and I turned them into a play,” he explained. Murphy added that the documentary was made “to celebrate the referendum, to remember Charlie, and to take the pulse of Ireland today.” A Day in May airs Wednesday, August 12 at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
