Alcaraz has been suffering from tenosynovitis - a painful inflammation of the fluid-filled sheath that surrounds the tendon on the inside of the wrist. Tenosynovitis is typically caused by repetitive movements like gripping and swinging a tennis racket, and can lead to swelling and ongoing tenderness. "It's really hard to cope with", says CiCi Bellis, a former world number 35 who retired aged 22 after suffering from recurring wrist injuries. With lower body injuries you can still be on court swinging but with the wrist it's so tough mentally because you can't. "For somebody like Alcaraz who has maybe the best forehand in the world, the wrist is so core to his game and he plays with a lot of spin using the wrist a lot.
