Ujman/Gazivoda lake in northern Kosovo accumulates water from the Iber/Ibar river. Kosovo’s Acting President, Albulena Haxhiu, protested on Monday after the Serbian President announced that Belgrade may change the course of the Iber/Ibar river. “A unilateral intervention in transboundary water flows would have consequences far beyond a technical issue, as it would affect the water, energy, environmental and human security of our republic,” she added. Haxhiu spoke out the day after President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia hinted at the initiative in what he described as justified retaliation against the Kosovo government’s policies towards Serbs in Kosovo. Serbia regards Kosovo as part of its territory and refuses to recognise its independence.
