In the second quarter of 2026, more U.S. bank branches opened than closed, according to an analysis of Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data by the nonprofit National Community Reinvestment Coalition.
In 2009, according to FDIC data , there were about 82,000 bank branches in the U.S. By 2025, that number had dropped to about 69,000.
