OTTAWA — Senator Kim Pate is raising questions about the safety of federal prisoner transports after the death of Kiara Mooswa in a Correctional Service Canada (CSC) vehicle crash last week.
He warned that if CSC fails to equip vehicles with seatbelts, “it will be in violation of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”
Questions about Indigenous women in federal custodyThe senator also linked the tragedy to broader systemic failures, pointing to the need for community-based alternatives for Indigenous people in custody.
Correctional Service CanadaGordon commended Correctional Service Canada for publicly acknowledging Mooswa and extending condolences to her family, friends and community.
Calls for improved transport safetyKim Beaudin, former vice-chief of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, also called for improved inmate transport safety.
