The president had traveled to Turkey for a NATO summit as the US renewed strikes against Iran following the breakdown of negotiations. On July 8, the administration announced that President Trump would depart Turkey aboard “the former Air Force One;” the president also posted this on Truth Social. President Trump was taken to an Air Force C-32A and left Turkey aboard the smaller aircraft, a US official familiar with the operation and another person with knowledge of the president’s travel told the newspaper. The US official described the former Air Force One, which departed carrying the press and some White House personnel, as a “decoy.” President Trump has previously faced several assassination plots.
