(25 News) – The Pekin City Council is delaying action on whether to renew its contract with the maker of license plate reading cameras after some in the audience compared the technology to George Orwell’s classic novel 1984. Pekin Police have used the technology for three years, and they strongly favor renewing the contact with Flock Safety for 54 cameras. Last year, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias raised privacy concerns after Flock allegedly shared information from license plate reading cameras to federal border agents. In another case, a North Carolina police officer is accused of using Flock cameras to track her boyfriend’s ex-wife. Plus, the department would not have access to information from many other communities using the Flock system.
