Four years in the making, the film follows ‌the story of Alejandra Marin Mendoza, known as Ale, a young Mexican woman who in 2009 kidnapped a baby after faking a pregnancy. “What really connected me with Ale was the question about why someone needs to fake ​a pregnancy for five months.” In her early 20s, newly married and expected to have a child, the film shows Ale struggling ⁠after suffering multiple miscarriages. Actors portray Ale, her husband Arturo and ​their families in the first part of the film, ‌continuing Alberdi’s hybrid documentary-making style. Alberdi ‌hopes “A Child of My Own” creates a conversation ​when it ⁠starts streaming on Netflix on Thursday.
