In recent years, the Indian state’s alleged policy of transnational repression against the Sikh diaspora has become a major topic of discussion in international diplomacy and media. Similarly, Canada alleged the involvement of Indian government officials in the 2023 assassination of a Sikh Canadian leader in Surrey. Furthermore, UN experts and special rapporteurs recently urged the Canadian government to protect Sikh Canadian activist Mohinder Singh and his family, who are reportedly targets of transnational repression and face threats to their lives.
