MÉRIDA, YUCATAN — Federal authorities in Yucatán have initiated legal proceedings against a foreign national accused of presenting a fraudulent Mexican birth certificate to secure refugee status for a minor, officials reported. She presented a forged birth certificate attempting to falsely prove that her younger sister was a Mexican citizen as part of an official application for asylum and legal residence in Mexico. During the verification process, immigration and asylum officials detected irregularities in the paperwork provided to COMAR, prompting a formal referral to federal prosecutors. The FGR filed criminal charges regarding the deliberate use and presentation of forged public documents within a federal administrative proceeding. Following a preliminary review of the evidence presented by prosecutors, a federal judge ruled that there were sufficient grounds to press charges, binding Olvita “N” to trial.
