MÉRIDA, Mexico — August 8, 2026 — Municipalities across the Yucatan Peninsula signed a historic letter of intent on Saturday to establish a regional agenda dedicated to promoting, revitalizing, and normalizing the daily use of the Maya language (Maayat’aan). The signing ceremony took place in Mérida during the First Peninsular Meeting of Municipalities for the Maya Language (Maayat’Aane’ Kuxa’an), held in frame of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The agreement brings together the local governments of Mérida, Cuncunul, and Tixcacalcupul in Yucatán, Hopelchén in Campeche, and José María Morelos in Quintana Roo. Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada emphasized that the initiative aims to keep the Maya language vibrant and active in schools, businesses, public institutions, and urban planning. To support linguistic revitalization, the City of Mérida is expanding educational access through the Municipal Institute for the Strengthening of Maya Culture.
