Iowa One Call’s Ben Booth says it’s easy to check for underground utilities before you dig by calling 8-1-1… and it isn’t optional. “The law says anyone planning to engage in any type of digging that may disturb the soil must first make a notice to Iowa call and that should be done at least 48 hours prior to doing any digging,” he says. He says the 48 hours does NOT include the day of notice, Saturdays, Sundays or legal holidays. Booth says it’s important to call, even if you are digging in your own front yard.
