As I reported in a feature on genocide studies for Jewish Currents, this episode was a particularly brazen example of how the field of genocide studies was structurally positioned to avoid addressing a genocide perpetuated by Israel against Palestinians. We’ll also talk about the state of genocide studies in 2026 and reflect on the “Textbook Case of Genocide” article three years later, now that naming genocide in Gaza has become increasingly common in mainstream liberal circles. Which means, therefore, that for them, Holocaust and genocide studies is actually designed to enshrine this hierarchy of Holocaust and genocide.
