The Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan includes plans to increase UK AI computing capacity twentyfold by 2030, develop AI Growth Zones, establish a National Data Library and expand the use of AI across government and the wider economy. Only 15% of UK businesses had adopted at least one AI technology in 2022, with adoption particularly concentrated among larger companies. AI firms and businesses using AI are also heavily concentrated in London and the South East. Skills shortages could limit AI adoptionDespite a relatively strong range of AI-related training in the UK, demand for AI skills continues to outstrip supply. These problems could limit the Government’s ambitions to use AI to improve productivity across the economy and make public services more efficient.
