Church Stretton Town Council has warned that a campfire discovered in Rectory Woods "could have been a major incident", while the National Trust is keeping the Long Mynd's snow gates closed because of the ongoing fire danger. The National Trust said the measure is intended to protect "livestock, livelihoods, wildlife, and the local community" while the fire risk remains high. The fresh warnings come after firefighters were called to an unattended bonfire at Plaish, near Church Stretton, on Sunday afternoon (August 9). Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Church Stretton used a hose reel jet to extinguish a waste fire measuring around three metres by one metre and damp down the surrounding area. The National Trust and local authorities are also reminding people that camping and overnight stays are not permitted on the Long Mynd.
