Good news for drivers crossing Guangzhou: the Phase I section of Huanan Expressway between Tuhua and Cen Village became permanently toll-free on August 8, bringing nearly 28 years of charges to an end. The zero-rate section covers the Tuhua, Xinzhou, Huangpu Avenue, Zhongshan Avenue, Guangyuan and Cen Village entrances and exits. A journey from Tuhua to Zhongshan Avenue, for example, now costs nothing. It also happens to offer one of Guangzhou’s more spectacular everyday drives. Dubbed ‘Guangzhou’s most expensive commute,’ the route previously cost some drivers RMB20–22 a day for a round trip.
