Relief for Nigerians in UK as NIS Moves to Clear Passport Backlog

The NIS said the Passport Intervention Team has been deployed to the UK to process pending applications, facilitate new passport applications and handle renewals as part of efforts to address persistent challenges associated with accessing passport services abroad.
A similar intervention exercise was conducted across several UK cities in December 2025, targeting Nigerians who had encountered difficulties obtaining early appointments for passport services.
The Service clarified that the intervention would not affect its existing digital passport services, which will remain available throughout the exercise.
“All NIS digital passport application channels, including the Contactless Passport Application System, remain fully operational during the intervention exercise,” it said.
The latest deployment is therefore expected to help reduce the backlog while ensuring that Nigerians in the UK continue to have access to both physical intervention services and the NIS’s digital passport platforms.
