An economic study carried out by Capital Economics last year found that our financial services industry employed around 6,700 people — just 7.5% of the population. Yet data from independent studies carried out in those years, by Oxford Economics and Capital Economics respectively, shows that financial industry employment increased by only 1,000 in that time. Financial services work is desk-based and flexible; working from home is far easier for those in a law firm or accounting firm than for those on a building site or in a hotel kitchen. Financial Services is an industry that fills the public purse without filling the highways. A thriving financial services industry can deliver the revenue to build the roads, schools and other infrastructure a modern Cayman needs while adding comparatively few people to burden them.
