Democratic politicians in Hawaii made a group effort Sunday morning to smooth ruffled feathers and mend possibly hurt feelings during a ritual following primary elections. One glaring no-show at the event was Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami, who defeated state Rep. Della Au Belatti (D, Makiki-­Punchbowl) with a vote margin of 66% to 26% in the Democratic primary race to replace Lt. Gov. Because political office in Hawaii is dominated by Democrats, efforts to unseat incumbents often come from within the party, and so the Unity Breakfast has been a tradition for decades.
