In a move that could disproportionately impact independent animation creators, YouTube has announced it will double the audience thresholds that new channels must meet before they can be monetized. Starting February 1, 2027, creators who apply to the YouTube Partner Program will need to reach 8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous year or 20 million qualified Shorts views within three months. YouTube says the higher barrier to entry is necessary given the platform’s growth and will help fund new creator incentives. The new requirements present a problem for all emerging creators, but animation channels face a particular disadvantage. Short-form creators face an even more daunting path to potential income.
