Indonesia eyes video game exports to drive digital economic growthRelated news: Indonesia adopts 3C framework to boost game industryRelated news: Ministry promotes esports talent development through ASIEDJakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is eyeing video game exports as a key driver for future economic growth, leveraging a global consumer base to transform its domestic creative economy into an export powerhouse.Speaking at the official launch event for the Nintendo Switch in Jakarta on Tuesday, Director of Games at the Ministry of Creative Economy Luat Sihombing highlighted the expanding footprint of local game developers in international markets.Data compiled by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs alongside the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) shows that local games contributed approximately Rp750 billion (approximately US$47 million) in 2024.The subsector, combined with digital applications, is projected to grow at a rate of 18.22 percent, significantly outperforming the broader domestic gaming market's annual growth rate of roughly 4 percent. "That Rp750 billion is consumed not only locally, but mostly globally. This demonstrates that the Indonesian game industry has strong potential to grow as a creative economy export product," Luat noted.He highlighted that the strength of Indonesia's gaming industry stems from foreign demand as well as domestic interest. "Our goal is to ensure that when global platforms enter Indonesia, they do not only see a consumer market, but also local producers and developers who can contribute to their ecosystem—this will ultimately increase the export value of Indonesia's creative economy,” Luat emphasized.
