Football in Malta is set for a number of changes, with the Malta Football Association outlining new rules designed to speed up matches and clamp down on time-wasting. Referees will also have new measures to deal with delayed restarts. If a throw-in is deliberately delayed, possession can be awarded to the opposition, while delaying a goal kick can result in a corner being given to the opposing team. When play is being delayed, referees will whistle, signal for the restart and begin a visible five-second countdown. The Malta FA summed up the changes with a simple message: “Less delay, more football,” saying it backs measures which keep matches moving.
