The loss of livestock is serious, and ranchers should not be expected to carry the financial or emotional costs of wolf restoration alone. The producers involved used range riders, human presence and deterrents before this wolf was killed. The tool that is used is not as important as how the tool is used. For 14 years, I have been working with ranchers, range riders and wolves in the West, demonstrating that this work does not have to frame ranchers as opponents of wolves or wolves as problems to eliminate. There is a better way.
