The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) is partnering with Choose Iowa members to connect veterans with local products through a new pilot program.
The Honor Harvest is a collaboration between IDALS, the U.S. Veterans Health Administration’s Office of Rural Health, the Iowa City VA Health Care System, and the Field to Family Food Hub that will provide weekly boxes of Iowa-grown food to 40 rural veterans.
The seven-week Honor Harvest program will serve veterans with diet-related health conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, or obesity.
IDALS is supplying $24,000 to the program to buy locally produced meat, dairy, and produce from members of its Choose Iowa program.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says, “Honor Harvest creates a meaningful new connection between Iowa veterans and Iowa farmers.
