Decades ago, the federal government committed by law to take responsibility for the nation’s spent nuclear fuel and move it to a permanent, secure location. Our coastline is not a nuclear waste dump, and the families of North County should not have to treat “temporary” storage as a permanent fact of life. A leaked White House plan revealed that the administration is finally taking a serious run at solving this problem for good. It’s a consent-based model: work with communities that want the jobs and the mission, rather than forcing a solution that collapses under its own politics. For the first time in a long time, we are pointed the right way.
