The City of Escondido celebrated the reopening of the renovated Escondido Public Library with a community ribbon-cutting and public tours on Saturday, August 1. The library officially reopen for regular service on Monday, August 3. The event also included the dedication of a new exterior mural honoring the Kumeyaay Nation’s creation story. Adrienne Cisneros-Selekman of Supervisor Jim Desmond’s office presented a plaque with this message: “As we celebrate the reopening of the Escondido Public Library, we proudly unveil The Kumeyaay Creation Story – Escondido Mural, a lasting tribute to the rich cultural heritage, history, and traditions of the Kumeyaay people, made possible through the vision, guidance, and collaboration of dedicated community partners. On behalf of the Escondido Community Foundation and the residents of Escondido, we extend our deepest gratitude to Michael Connolly Miskwish for sharing Kumeyaay cosmology, traditional night sky knowledge, and the Kumeyaay Creation Story that inspired artist Tim Topalov’s mural, and we congratulate the Escondido Public Library for its reopening and its commitment to honoring Kumeyaay heritage, creating an enduring cultural and educational legacy for our community and future generations.
