The posts appeared on the account 100scotland, which has around 140,000 followers and normally publishes photography of Scottish landmarks. We understand that Police Scotland has said it is aware of the posts and is assessing them to establish the source. Claims of this kind circulated through social media accounts are common and are very rarely followed by any device being found. Making a hoax bomb threat is a criminal offence in Scotland, prosecuted under the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995, and carries a maximum sentence of seven years on indictment. Gaining unauthorised access to a computer system or social media account is separately an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.
