Forest roads within the fire perimeter are still closed to the public, but main thoroughfares are open for public use. AUGUST 10, 8:35 A.M. UPDATE:Firefighters have increased containment on the Ward Fire to 65% as crews continue to gain control of the blaze burning south of Ely. Crews continue to construct control lines to the west near the ridgeline of Ward Mountain and strengthening containment and contingency lines to the north. The Ward Fire started July 31 near Ward Mountain and is burning through sagebrush, pinyon-juniper and mixed conifer fuels in steep, rugged terrain. Evacuations remain at Level 1, meaning residents should stay ready and continue monitoring updates from the White Pine County Sheriff's Office.
